Evergreen’s presence, gifts and talents were quite evident at the 5th annual Pittsboro Relay for Life this past Friday night!
Our presence included at least thirty participants and fifteen more spectators. There were many others with us in thought and prayer. We had contestants for all three of the big competitions as well as many of the overnight activities. Team Evergreen had someone walking laps around the track non-stop from 6: 30 p.m. Friday until 9:00 a.m. Saturday. Our campsite, turned craft shop, was attended all through the night as well.
The gifts possessed by Evergreen were apparent from the outset. Both praise bands, the Connection and the Third Watch, opened the event with music and song. Many one-of-a-kind items, handcrafted by Evergreeners were for sale throughout the event at our Cabin by the Track.
A highlight for everyone was the appearance of Miss Luscious Greene (Pastor Jeff), with her golf swing gone awry in the Miss Relay contest. She made an excellent “showing” in spite of some “tough” competition. Her purse just didn’t have the necessary bulge to qualify for first place.
Darcy Knight, our entrant in the Relay Idol contest was outstanding as she sang Snake in the Grass. Darcy’s little collection basket was stuffed to the brim - someone else’s basket was larger….
A cardboard box, multicolor paint and a good pair of sneakers…. Add these to the speed of driver Dylan Stroupe and the quickness of Catie Briggs as his pit crew. Together they claimed third place in the Boxcar Race to Recovery at 3 a.m. Saturday.
Donations from our families, friends, co-workers and church family were outstanding! Money given in support of the teams eight individual members and to the team’s fund neared $9000. Another $1300 came from the collections of our contestants and sales from the “cabin”. With more donations promised, Evergreen has raised $10,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Thank you Evergreen for supporting your relay team. Thank you to the 2006 Relay Team: Alberta Atwater, Anna Nicholson, Connie Riddle, Deddie Craig, Dylan Stroupe, Joyce Baird and Sondra Soloman for all you have done to make this relay a success. Special thanks to Joyce Baird as our top fund raiser and creator of many of the items for sale in our “cabin”.
Those who were present at the Relay will all agree that the two events underlining the reason we do this were the Survivor’s lap and the lighting of the luminaria. Over 350 survivors of cancer made their way around the track to begin the Relay. At 9 p.m. the field lights were turned off and everyone stopped all activity as more than 1700 luminaria were lighted. The luminaria were placed in loving memory of those who lost their life to cancer, and in honor of the many currently fighting their battle with cancer. The luminaria burned all through the night to remind us that we were there walking to support and bring hope to these folks. Hope that one day soon all cancer will have a treatment and a cure.
