A team of twenty one members and scouts of Evergreen UMC raised nearly $2300 to benefit the
hungry. They joined with individuals, school clubs and other Chatham County church groups
in Goldston, NC to participate in the 17th Annual Chatham Hunger Walk on October 23rd. Each
of the two hundred walkers had recieved pledges from sponsors totaling $18,000. This money
will be used by CORA (Chatham Outreach Alliance) to operate the food pantry in Pittsboro. Last
year CORA provided 125,000 meals and expects they will be asked to provide 150,000 meals this year.
There was on option to walk either 5K or 10K - all of the Evergreeners chose to complete the 10K. This
distance signifies the distance many of the world's hungry travel to get food. Taking part in the
walk from Evergreen were Velma and John Grose, Sarah Dixon, Walton and Marion Haywood and the church
sponsored Boy Scout Troop 951: Adrian Gilliam, Wes Sturdivant, Garrett Wolfe, Noah Markworth, CJ Crabtree,
Nathan Kosiba, Jackson Seagroves, TJ Wright, Jack Kock. Along with the troop were these leaders
and parents: Stan Koziol, Robbie Dirks, Doug Gilliam, Bobby Seagroves, Terry Blake, Taylor Wright and Bob Koch.
The scouts were on a double mission. In addition to raising $1690 for CORA, they were meeting one of the
requirements needed to receive a Hiking Merit Badge. Before starting the 6.2 mile Hunger Walk, they
had already walked four miles at the Northwood High School cross country track.
