2005 Evergreen Annual Yard Sale
9/10/05
|
The much anticipated Evergreen Annual Yard Sale was held on Saturday September 10th with nearly forty members participating
in the event. Many, many more if you count everyone that donated items to sell. There were more donations this year than
ever - so many that they overflowed into a second storage trailer! Most of Friday morning was spent unloading those
trailers. Thanks to Walton, Jo, Jeff, Dickie, Alberta, Glen, and Carolyn for the help unloading. Then Catherine,
Georgeanne, Melanie, Rick, Stan, Kathy and Trish joined us to get all the boxes emptied and the contents set out on the block
and board tables. By 8:30 Friday night the tents were all up, the tables all in place, loaded with treasures and covered
to protect against the night time dew.
Saturday was clear and bright - the kind of day that draws folks out to a yard sale. People were milling around, wanting to
start shopping at 7:15 a.m. They were greeted by Jim Bond and Rachel with information about our church and UMCOR at the
Evergreen tent. Kevin (P.) and Herman enticed the visitors with coffee and homemade ham biscuits. As the shopping
started, more and more cars crowded into the parking lot. Stan Koziol stepped up to direct traffic, and help folks get into
and out of their parking spot as well as load their treasures into or onto their vehicles - "no arrests and I only had to pull
two licenses…".
Connie, Paula and Catie helped ladies decide on a quilt and matching sheets. Alberta got people interested in the
furniture. Kathy and Trish greeted their repeat customers and met a whole crowd of new ones in the lawn and garden section
- "let me tell you what that iris needs…". Gerri, Joanne (J.) and Melanie cleared their tables of a huge amount of
dining/kitchen ware. Jo, Cindy, Phyllis and Alex convinced buyers that they had just the right nic-nac or piece of artwork
- "that looks like an original watercolor - see the signature there…" to complete their décor.
Howard and Walton maintained a multi-media display with computers, TVs, cameras, radios, etc. Roger’s hat with the Mickey
Mouse ears put the kids at ease in the toy section, while Sarah helped the moms choose outfits. Steven hawked the hardware,
as Elaine covered the craft and seasonal items. Rob was a floater - assisting in all areas, including Spanish translation.
Baubles and bangles, hats and scarves, boots and belts were Joyce Baird’s specialty. Darcy was the librarian for thousands
of titles of books and music, while Dede was clothier with thousands of "ensembles".
The crowd thinned and prices were dropped. Finally the last dollar was collected, money aprons removed and the cleanup crew
arrived. As left over merchandise was packed into boxes for the PTA thrift shop to pick up, the block and board tables were
dismantled and stacked. Jeff, Bob, Jane Stan, Gene, Pat and Miriam made this part move along quickly. "Where did your
box of books get to Pat?" (If your name was not mentioned here, please know that it was not intentional, and that your help
was greatly appreciated.)
There is no way this sale could have been held without the help of so many from beginning to end. Thanks to all of you for
making this a very profitable sale in terms of congregational participation and fellowship, community involvement, oh yes, and
cash - $4200!
